Software Engineering Institute

Do not be alarmed by the name "Software Engineering."  The Institute is all about consistent, predictable processes that produce consistent, predictable quality.  The SEI includes an effort devoted strictly to Management (which is what we're talking about here).  The concept to keep in mind is that management can happen either by constantly looking over the shoulders of producers--not very palatable to anyone--or by designing a set of well documented, well understood processes that can be measured and improved.

Such processes can be formalized and training programs and competencies implemented around them.  These processes are the focus of WhiteLake Data Management.  The following overview of the levels of the CMMI will show how this paradigm can be used to create the organization you've always dreamed of.

The objective of the SEI's efforts is to encourage us to develop and use one or more methodologies in the production of our work products.  They offer the CMMI and other tools as a framework within which to define those methodologies.

Capability Maturity Model Integration

Several capability maturity models were developed within the Software Engineering Institute.  They have been merged into a single, comprehensive and integrated CMMI (capability maturity model integration).  This model provides a framework or architecture for process improvement and suggests metrics for assessment.  There are four

As organizations establish and improve the processes by which they develop and maintain their information management work products, they progress through levels of maturity. The five maturity levels of the CMMI [are, in order of advancing maturity and capability]

1) Initial

from which establishment of a disciplined process leads to

2) Repeatable

in which establishment of standard, consistent processes leads to

3) Defined

where predictable processes are established and quantitative methods are applied leading to

4) Quantitatively Managed

Here, modified attitudes and expections result in a culture of continuously improving process and leads to

5) Optimizing

The optimizing level is also known as a continuously improving or learning organization.
